Finding Family History at County Museum
A museum archival outreach event, “Finding Your Family’s
History through Genealogical Research,” will take place
on Saturday, October 9 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the San Bernardino
County Museum’s Schuiling Gallery. The program is free with
museum general admission.
“If you are thinking about starting a family history project
for yourself, this is a good place to begin,” said Michele
Nielsen, museum history division archivist. “For those who
have already started genealogical research projects, this event
offers an opportunity to review basic techniques and to discover
new information related to the plethora of data now available
on-line through use of the internet.”
Diana Rounds, an expert on family history research, will present
information on how to start gathering data on your ancestors and
how to use that data to discover more about your family story.
She will cover basic techniques, beginning with compiling information
you already have or facts you know about your family. She will
discuss recently released census data and methods for finding
information through government, church, and other types of records.
A mini exhibit featuring select examples of family history documents
from the permanent collections of the San Bernardino County Museum
Archives will be mounted and resource materials related to federal
records research will be available. The program concludes with
a short question and answer period.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit
from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through
Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is $6 (adult),
$5 (student or senior), and $4 (child aged 5 to 12). Children
under five and Museum Association members are admitted free, and
everyone will be admitted free on Sunday, September 5. Parking
is free, and the facility is handicapped-accessible. The museum’s
Garden Café will be open for lunch and snacks between 11
a.m. and 2 p.m. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org
