Long Weekend at the County Museum
The San Bernardino County Museum invites the public to visit
the museum in Redlands with no admission fee on Sunday, September
5. The museum will also be open on Labor Day Monday, September
6. Usual admission fees apply on the holiday Monday.
“We know that many people, especially those with large
families, plan their visits to the museum to coincide with free
admission days,” said Museum Director Robert McKernan. “Free
admission days are more crowded than usual, but it’s wonderful
to see so many people learning about their cultural and natural
heritage. Sometimes the crowds make learning even more enjoyable
and interactive.”
The museum also continues its tradition of being open on holiday
Mondays; it is usually open Tuesdays through Sundays. Holiday
Monday hours were instituted at the request of visitors, many
of whom enjoy museum visits on days when the whole family has
free time together.
“Making the museum as accessible as possible for our visitors,
especially families, is very important to us,” continued
McKernan. “We’re very proud of our position as the
premiere educational attraction for learning about the heritage
of inland Southern California and the Southwest, and we will do
everything in our power to make our exhibits and programs accessible
to everyone.”
While at the museum, visitors can see a special exhibit called
“Worth a Thousand Words” that highlights photographic
images from the Sun-Telegram and Redlands Daily Facts newspaper
negative collections dating back a half-century. Displays of specimens
and artifacts on three floors of the museum also present local
history, anthropology, geology, paleontology, and biological sciences
in regional context.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit
from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through
Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is $6 (adult),
$5 (student or senior), and $4 (child aged 5 to 12). Children
under five and Museum Association members are admitted free, and
everyone will be admitted free on Sunday, September 5. Parking
is free, and the facility is handicapped-accessible. The museum’s
Garden Café will be open for lunch and snacks between 11
a.m. and 2 p.m. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org
