Mojave Desert Prehistory
Dr. Mark Q. Sutton will discuss the past twenty years of research
into Mojave Desert prehistory at a guest lecture at the San Bernardino
County Museum on Wednesday, May 26, at 7:30 p.m. The talk, one
of the county museum's guest lecture series, is offered at no
charge.
Dr. Sutton has worked as an archaeologist for the Bureau of Land
Management and a variety of private consulting firms. He has taught
at a number of colleges and universities, joining the faculty
of California State University, Bakersfield, in 1987 where he
is presently a Professor of Anthropology.
He has worked at more than 100 archaeological sites in western
North America and has written more than 130 books, monographs,
and papers in archaeology and anthropology.
"Considerable new work has been done since 1984 when Claude
Warren wrote his classic chapter in California Archaeology on
the Mojave Desert," said Sutton. "Academic research
and field studies conducted by and for the Bureau of Land Management
and military bases in the Mojave Desert have resulted in much
new learning. I'll be discussing this research and how it contributes
to a greater understanding of the past."
The San Bernardino County Museum's free guest lecture series was
organized to bring experts in cultural and natural history to
the museum to share their research with the public. The museum
is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands.
Parking is free, and the facility is handicapped-accessible. For
more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org
