OWLS
The museum’s OWL kit is designed to assist students in two fields. First, the contents provide a well-rounded source of basic owl information. Second, if the educator has access to owl pellets, through dissection, the students are able to study the diet of a predaceous bird and observe the skeletal structure of rodents or birds.
Kit contents include:
One beautifully preserved whole owl specimen, in a sealed Plexiglas box
One sealed display box with representative owl pellets and rodent skulls
Owl Pellet Study Kit with resource manual for owl pellet labs and wooden probes
Video: National Audubon Society’s Owls Up Close, 55 minutes, all ages. This video discusses owls in general and specific species. Hearing, vision, hunting, and flight are a few of the covered owl facets.
Video: Carolina Audiovisuals’ All That Remains: Investigating Owls through Owl Pellet Labs, 20 minutes +, all ages. This video is in two parts. The first is an abbreviated version of the above, with excellent information. The second is the owl pellet lab introduction with visual dissection. This part should be reviewed by the educator before the lab commences.
Books include (n.b., all books are thoroughly illustrated):
Animal Lives: The Barn Owl, ages pre K-10. This read-aloud book chronicles a year in the life of a barn owl.
